Prof. Dr. Tabea Flügge is a Professor at the Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF) and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, where she holds the W2 Endowed Professorship for 'Digital Technologies for the Rehabilitation of Patients with Complex Facial Defects.' She is affiliated with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, operating across Campus Benjamin Franklin and Campus Virchow-Klinikum in Berlin.
Her educational background includes a dentistry degree from Charité (2004–2010), a doctorate from Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg (2013), and a habilitation in dentistry from the same institution (2018). She became a certified specialist in oral surgery in 2016 and completed a research fellowship at ACTA, Free University of Amsterdam (2015–2016).
Her research centers on digital imaging and computer-aided treatment planning in oral and maxillofacial surgery, with a particular emphasis on the application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in dentistry. She investigates how 3D anatomical data from optical and X-ray-based imaging can be used to reconstruct facial structures and restore function after trauma or disease. Her work is clinically driven and translationally oriented, aiming to bridge digital innovation with patient care. She is especially interested in automating treatment planning using algorithms and exploring cross-disciplinary data integration in digital medicine.
Prof. Flügge holds leadership roles at the ECDF, including membership in the Board of Directors since 2023 and serving as one of the dual spokespersons since 2024. She is also actively involved in professional development, mentoring in the German Society for Implantology and serving on the boards of DGI Next Generation and Young ITI.
Her scientific contributions include 44 publications, focusing on imaging technologies, surgical planning, and digital reconstruction in maxillofacial surgery. Though specific titles were not provided, the body of work reflects a strong trend toward innovation in digital dentistry and interdisciplinary collaboration.
She is a member of several professional organizations, including the German Society for Implantology (DGI), International Team for Implantology (ITI), Dentists Without Borders, and Berlin Dental Aid Organization. She receives no mention of part-time status and is actively engaged in full-time academic and clinical duties.
Prof. Flügge’s lab and research team operate within the ECDF and Charité’s Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery clinics, collaborating with Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery (CC 9) at CVK. Her future work aims to further integrate AI and automation into surgical workflows, improving precision and accessibility in facial reconstruction.
