Prof. Dr. Katja Lembke serves as Director of the Lower Saxony State Museum Hannover since May 2011 and holds an Honorary Professorship in Classical Archaeology at the University of Göttingen since 2015. Previously, she was Executive Director of the Roemer- and Pelizaeus-Museum Hildesheim (2005-2011).
Her academic foundation includes:
- Studies in Classical Archaeology, Egyptology, and Latin at Tübingen, Munich, Rome, and Heidelberg (1984-1992)
- Doctorate from Heidelberg University (1992) on "The Iseum Campense in Rome" under Prof. Tonio Hölscher
Lembke's research integrates field archaeology with museum curation, focusing on Roman-Egyptian intersections and Near Eastern sanctuaries. Her long-term project on Tuna el-Gebel's Roman Necropolis (ongoing since 2004) exemplifies her specialization in funerary archaeology, complemented by prior work on the Siwa Oasis tombs and Amrit's Spring Sanctuary. This trajectory highlights her methodological fusion of epigraphic analysis, artifact restoration, and cross-cultural exchange studies within Greco-Roman provincial contexts.
Project leadership constitutes her primary scholarly contribution, with major initiatives funded by Germany's DFG, DAAD, and Volkswagen Foundation. Notable undertakings include coordination of the Pergamon Museum's Egyptian restoration (2002-2004) and directorship of two DFG-sponsored excavations (Siwa Oasis 1998-2000; Amrit 2000-2003). While formal student advising isn't documented, her project management implies mentorship of field teams and junior researchers.
