Katja Boersma is a Professor of Psychology at Örebro University, Sweden, affiliated with the School of Behavioural, Social and Legal Sciences and the Center for Health and Medical Psychology (CHAMP). She holds a PhD in Psychology from Örebro University (2005) and has been a licensed psychologist since 2001. Her research focuses on health psychology, chronic pain mechanisms, and psychological interventions to improve quality of life for individuals with persistent pain and mental health issues.
Key research areas include: 1) Psychological processes in chronic pain development, 2) Comorbidity between pain and mental health disorders, 3) Workplace health interventions, and 4) Adolescent mental health trajectories. She leads projects like the Trestadsstudien examining mental health in youth and the Hybrid Project developing transdiagnostic treatments.
Teaching responsibilities include health psychology and thesis supervision in Örebro’s psychology program. She collaborates with clinical partners like the Pain and Rehabilitation Center in Linköping. Current studies explore opioid prescribing patterns, sleep disorders in adolescents, and network analysis of pain-related factors in older adults.
Her work emphasizes translational research, aiming to bridge clinical practice and population-level prevention strategies. Recent initiatives include digital health interventions (DAHLIA project) and workplace-based programs to reduce pain-related disability.
