Katinka Johansen is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Sociology at Lund University. Her research focuses on the intersection of energy systems and social science, particularly examining socio-technical aspects of energy transitions. She has established herself as a specialist in Danish energy systems, with particular expertise in district heating and wind power sectors.
Dr. Johansen holds a PhD in social psychology and energy transitions and an MSc in political anthropology, creating a strong interdisciplinary foundation for her work. Her educational background bridges the social sciences and energy studies, allowing her to approach energy transition challenges from multiple theoretical perspectives including science and technology studies (STS), planning and governance studies, and social and political anthropology.
Her research interests span socio-technical systems and energy planning, energy transitions and social psychology, and environmental psychology with a focus on environmental justice and political ecology. She examines how renewable energy technologies interact with social and political systems, particularly studying controversies, environmental impact assessment processes, policy initiatives for renewable energy promotion, and actor perspectives on socio-technical change processes. Her work often focuses on the Danish district heating sector while also exploring broader topics like elite resistance to political change in Bolivia and land conflicts in post-war Gulu, Northern Uganda.
Analysis of Dr. Johansen's publication record reveals a consistent focus on the socio-technical dimensions of energy transitions, particularly in the Danish context. Her work spans historical analyses of energy systems, contemporary challenges in district heating and wind power, and psychological aspects of energy infrastructure acceptance. There's a clear trajectory from examining specific case studies to developing broader theoretical frameworks for understanding energy transitions through social science lenses, with particular attention to the social and political psychology of change processes.
Dr. Johansen is actively involved in collaborative research, notably as a participant in the Urban Arena project. This network project connects her with numerous researchers across Lund University working on urban sustainability challenges. Her research contributes to several UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), and climate action (SDG 13).
Her teaching focuses on research design and methodology, qualitative methods and mixed methods approaches, and ethnography, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to studying energy systems. Dr. Johansen's work demonstrates how social science methodologies can provide critical insights into the human dimensions of energy transitions, complementing technical analyses of energy systems. Her expertise is frequently sought by media for topics including sociotechnical perspectives of wind farm planning, EIA processes and district heating, energy planning and related social and political controversies.
