Katie Shifflett serves as the Assistant Director of On-Campus and Paraprofessional Teaching Fellows and Coordinator of the Bachelor of Individualized Study (BIS) at James Madison University’s College of Education. She holds a B.S. in Psychology with Elementary Education Certification from Eastern Mennonite University and an M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Virginia. Prior to joining JMU, she taught for thirteen years in Rockingham County Public Schools, including four years as an English middle school teacher and nine years as a reading specialist. She received the Teacher of the Year Award in 2013-2014 at River Bend Elementary and has been a full-time adjunct instructor at JMU since 2018.
Her professional focus centers on literacy development, curriculum design, and educational leadership, reflected in courses like LED 366 (Early Literacy Development) and READ 530 (Literacy Development, Assessment, and Instruction: K-12). She actively contributes to teacher education through her coordination of the BIS program and advising roles.

Outside academia, she balances family life with two children and three dogs, while pursuing hobbies like running and hiking.
