Professor Katie Manthey serves as a faculty member in the Department of English & Writing Studies at Salem College, where she specializes in guiding undergraduate research within the Concentration in Professional Writing. Her mentorship spans a diverse array of interdisciplinary projects that bridge writing studies with literary analysis, feminist theory, digital humanities, and health humanities.
Her research interests are deeply rooted in contemporary literary and writing practices, with a particular emphasis on:
- Writing Studies, especially professional and digital writing contexts
- Literary Analysis of contemporary fiction, including feminist and horror genres
- Feminist Theory and its application to narrative structures
- Digital Humanities, particularly the impact of AI on writing communities
- Health Humanities, exploring embodiment and neurodiversity in writing centers
- Oral History methodologies in regional studies
Professor Manthey has advised numerous students on senior projects, including Joella Cleary's examination of Carmen Maria Machado's work, Chloe Snow's oral history project on Southern Appalachian women, Sadie Sawyers' study on inheritance of meaning in professional writing, Anna Rymer's research on AI and embodiment, Helena Bowman's dual projects on young adult horror fiction and first-year writing experiences, and Nikkola Brown's investigations into Toni Morrison's fiction and neurodiversity in writing centers. Her students frequently integrate multiple disciplines, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to writing and literature.
