Katie Graham is an Assistant Professor in the Teaching Stream at the School of Journalism and Communication, Carleton University, Ottawa, where she has been faculty since 2019. She also serves as associate faculty at the Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) and Digital Initiatives Advisor for the Canadian Centre for Mindful Habitats.
Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Architectural Studies (B.AS.) and Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) from Carleton University's Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism (2008, 2010), and she is currently completing her PhD dissertation on virtual reality storytelling of space and architecture.
Graham's research centers on visual communications, digital media, and storytelling through virtual reality applications in architectural representation. She explores how immersive technologies can reveal invisible aspects of built environments and cultural heritage, with particular focus on narrative structures in spatial storytelling. Her commitment to student engagement manifests in initiatives like BMPD Storytellers, Create-action, and Create-Collab that foster community and belonging.
Her publication record demonstrates consistent exploration of BIM-to-VR translation, architectural visualization, and narrative techniques, primarily appearing in architecture and digital media journals with recurring themes of technical optimization for immersive storytelling.
Graham has received significant recognition for her pedagogical contributions:
- Excellence in Blended and Online Teaching Award (2021) from Teaching and Learning Services
- Teaching Excellence Award (2024) from the Faculty of Public Affairs
- prix gémeaux (2020) for "Parliament: A Virtual Experience"
As an educator, she develops innovative student-centered curricula while contributing to research through CIMS projects that translate architectural data into public-facing VR experiences. Her mindfulness-focused work with the Canadian Centre for Mindful Habitats examines digital ethics in culturally significant storytelling.
Graham's primary research affiliation is with the Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS), where she leads projects using digital assets to create web, mobile, and VR public outreach experiences that make architectural heritage accessible, exemplified by the award-winning "Parliament: A Virtual Experience".
