Dr. Katie Fleming is a Lecturer in Twentieth-Century and Contemporary Literature at Queen Mary University of London's School of English and Drama. She holds a BA, MPhil, and PhD in Classics from King’s College, Cambridge. Her research focuses on the classical tradition, particularly the role of antiquity in modern intellectual thought, philosophy, and theory from the late eighteenth century to the present. She explores how ancient literature and philosophy inform contemporary debates in critical theory, with a special interest in the politics of reception.
Her teaching spans undergraduate courses such as ESH243 Architexts and postgraduate seminars like ESH7013 James Joyce's Finnegans Wake. She has supervised doctoral theses including Michael Gilbert’s work on James Joyce and Heidegger, and Ahren Warner’s study of commodity fetishism in poetry.
Recent research includes examining Martin Heidegger’s interpretation of Sophocles’ Antigone and a book project on classical thought’s influence on the Frankfurt School. Her publications address themes like the ethics of Heidegger’s philosophy, Seneca’s Oedipus in modern translation, and fascism’s engagement with classical myths.
Fleming actively collaborates on edited volumes, such as Seneca in the English Tradition (2013) and The Reception of Classical Antiquity in German Literature (2013). Her work bridges classical studies with modern theory, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to antiquity’s legacy.
