Professor Katie Featherstone is a Professor of Sociology and Medicine at the University of West London, leading the Geller Institute of Ageing and Memory (GIAM). Her research focuses on improving care for people with dementia in acute hospital settings, emphasizing institutional cultures of care and reducing dehumanization. Funded by the NIHR, her work bridges ethnography with policy impact, appearing in outlets like The Guardian and BBC documentaries. She has directed major studies on continence care, restrictive practices, and personhood in dementia care.
Key research interests include medical sociology, healthcare ethics, and the intersection of intersectionality in care practices. Her interdisciplinary teams have secured over £1.5M in grants, addressing challenges like hospital care for dementia patients and psychosocial well-being in stroke services.
Publications highlight ethnographic analyses of care practices, including 'Wandering the wards' (Routledge, 2020) and recent articles on bodily urgency and cultural control. As a leader in translating research into policy, she collaborates with media to amplify findings, ensuring practical impacts on healthcare practices.
