Dr. Katie Brown is a Senior Lecturer in Latin American Studies within the Languages, Cultures and Visual Studies department at the University of Exeter, where she joined in 2018. She served as co-Director of Education and Student Experience for Languages, Cultures and Visual Studies from 2021-2024 and is leading the development of the new BA Comparative Literatures and Cultures with Prof Helena Taylor.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Spanish American Studies from King's College London (2012-2016)
- MA in European Studies from Cardiff University (2011-2012)
- BA Modern Languages and European Studies (French and Spanish) from the University of Bath (2007-2011)
- Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice from King's College London (2015)
Dr. Brown specializes in contemporary Latin American culture, with a particular focus on Venezuela. Her research examines the circulation of people (through travel, migration and exile) and of texts (through publishing, cultural policy and translation), alongside questions of identity and cultural responses to politics in the 20th and 21st century. She approaches these topics through an interdisciplinary lens that connects literary studies, cultural studies, and linguistic analysis.
Her scholarly output demonstrates consistent engagement with how cultural production responds to political contexts, particularly in Venezuela. Her monograph Writing and the Revolution: Venezuelan Metafiction (2004-2012) established her expertise in Venezuelan literary production during the Bolivarian era, while her more recent work has expanded to examine migration patterns, publishing networks, and translation practices. Her research shows a clear evolution from analyzing domestic cultural policy to examining transnational cultural flows.
Dr. Brown actively supervises research in areas including Venezuelan studies, contemporary Latin American literature and culture, migration and exile, publishing, translation and reception, and comparative literatures and cultures. She has taught Spanish and Latin American literature throughout her career at King's College London, University of Bristol, and University of Exeter.
She is very active in the Hispanic Studies community, serving as Treasurer for the Association of Hispanists and regularly attending conferences. Dr. Brown is also part of an international team working on digitizing, editing, studying and translating the 13th century General e Gran Estoria, commissioned by Alfonso X, demonstrating her commitment to historical textual scholarship alongside her contemporary research interests.
