Kathy Whitham is a tenured Lecturer in the Department of English at South Seattle College since 2004, teaching Literature (specializing in Asian American Literature, Graphic Novels, and Young Adult Literature), Creative Writing, Asian Film, World Cinema, and Composition. She also facilitates workshops at the University of Washington's East Asia Resource Center (EARC) since 2019.
Her research and creative practice centers on Asian American cultural narratives and visual storytelling, with particular focus on:
- Graphic novel adaptations of historical experiences
- Multigenerational migration and identity
- Zine-making as activist pedagogy
- Representation in Asian diaspora literature
- Film analysis of Asian and global cinema
- Composition pedagogy through creative forms
Recent EARC workshops demonstrate her interdisciplinary approach, including analyses of Teresa Wong's All Our Ordinary Stories (2025), Hiromi Goto's Shadow Life (2023), and Kathleen Burkinshaw's The Last Cherry Blossom (2022). She currently serves as illustrator for a non-fiction graphic novel documenting Japanese War Brides' experiences.
