Kathy Hafer is a Professor of the Practice of Biology at Washington University in St. Louis, affiliated with the Department of Biology in the College of Arts & Sciences. She teaches courses such as Principles of Biology and Phage Hunters, a research-based laboratory course for first-year students.
In Phage Hunters, students participate in a national experiment organized by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), aiming to isolate and characterize bacteriophage viruses from local St. Louis soil samples. This hands-on course integrates education and research, providing early-career students with practical experience in microbiology and molecular biology.
