Kathryn Picanco is a Professor in the Department of Education at Whitworth University, where she has been a faculty member since 2008. Her expertise spans differentiated instruction, gifted education, sustainability education, classroom assessment, and Montessori education. She holds an Ed.D. and M.Ed. from Washington State University and a B.A. from Santa Clara University.
Her research focuses on creating inclusive and supportive educational environments, particularly for gifted students and those requiring differentiated learning approaches. She has published extensively on topics such as Montessori training for public school teachers, inquiry-based learning strategies, and social-emotional development in gifted education. Her work emphasizes collaboration between universities and communities to enhance educational practices.
Dr. Picanco’s awards include the Sue Chandler Endowed Professor of Education (2018–present), the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Washington Association of Educators of the Talented and Gifted (2013), and the Dean’s Junior Faculty Award at Whitworth University (2010). She actively contributes to professional development programs and conferences, advocating for innovative teaching methods and sustainability education.
In advising and grants, she has mentored numerous students through courses like EDU 461 (Assessment, Management, and Differentiation for Elementary School) and EDG 551 (Social and Emotional Components of Giftedness). Her courses integrate technology and community partnerships to prepare future educators for diverse classroom settings.
