معرفی
Kathryn Kavanagh is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. She leads the Kavanagh Research Laboratory, focusing on evolutionary developmental biology and vertebrate morphology. Her academic contributions span teaching, research, and grant-funded projects.
- PhD, James Cook University of North Queensland (1998)
- MA, College of William and Mary (1992)
Her research explores how developmental processes interact with ecology to shape morphological evolution, particularly in vertebrate skeletal systems. Key projects include adaptive plasticity in bird and mammal anatomy and co-evolution of traits in damselfishes. She teaches Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy and mentors doctoral research in integrative biology.
Scientific awards highlight her NSF-funded citizen science initiative (CUBICS) and ONR-supported studies on humpback whale behaviors. Her publications in Nature and Nature Communications demonstrate expertise in evolutionary prediction models and developmental constraints.
Based in Liberal Arts 385, Kavanagh combines empirical and experimental approaches grounded in evo-devo theory. She actively contributes to undergraduate and graduate education through programs like the Integrative Biology PhD.
