Bhart-Anjan Bhullar is an Associate Professor of Earth & Planetary Sciences at Yale University, where he also serves as Associate Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology and Vertebrate Zoology. His research group focuses on major transitions in vertebrate evolution, combining fossil evidence with modern biological techniques including molecular developmental biology, 3D imaging, and geometric analysis. The lab maintains a strong commitment to field discovery and operates within Yale's rich paleontological community, leveraging resources like the Peabody Museum collections and supported field expeditions.
His research interests center on understanding pivotal evolutionary events at the origins of major vertebrate radiations (birds, mammals, tetrapods, etc.) through an integrative approach bridging paleontology, developmental biology, and functional morphology. Key areas include skeletal transformations, locomotor adaptations, and cranial evolution across deep time.
Analysis of Dr. Bhullar's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on evolutionary morphology, with strong emphases on: 1) functional anatomy and biomechanics of locomotion and feeding systems, 2) developmental pathways underlying major skeletal transformations, 3) quantitative morphometric approaches to fossil interpretation, and 4) the dinosaur-bird transition. This work frequently employs cutting-edge imaging and modeling techniques to reconstruct evolutionary processes.
The Bhullar Lab maintains specialized facilities including a molecular developmental lab with cell-culture capabilities and access to high-resolution CT scanning. Field programs explore vertebrate-bearing strata globally, with students actively participating in expedition planning.
