Christopher Griffin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geosciences at Princeton University, where he will lead a research group starting in July 2024. He previously held a postdoctoral fellowship and has established a strong research profile in vertebrate paleontology and evolutionary development.
His research focuses on the interplay between growth, development, and vertebrate evolution, particularly during evolutionary radiations and the emergence of major clades. He employs both fossil and extant organisms to study intraspecific variation, convergent evolution, and homology. His expertise spans vertebrate paleontology, bone histology, phylogenetics, and ontogenetic analysis.
The 15 most recent publications highlight a consistent trend in studying dinosaur and archosaur development, with emphasis on bone growth patterns, pelvic evolution, body size changes across mass extinctions, and the developmental origins of avian traits. Key themes include ontogenetic trajectories, skeletal maturity assessment, evolutionary morphology, and fossil histology.
Christopher Griffin is actively building his research team and welcomes PhD students and postdoctoral researchers to join his group at Princeton. He maintains a robust publication record with 19 total publications and extensive collaborations across institutions. His work has been cited by leading researchers in paleontology and evolutionary biology.
He is associated with the Christopher Griffin Lab at Princeton University, which will focus on integrative approaches to vertebrate evolution combining developmental biology with paleontological data.
