Kathryn J. Lively is a tenured Professor of Sociology at Dartmouth College, where she previously chaired the department (2011-2015), served as house professor for South House (2015-2019), and held the position of Dean of the College (2018-2021). Her work bridges sociological social psychology, emotion studies, and cultural analysis.

Dr. Lively's research focuses on the interplay between identity, emotion, and culture. She currently pursues two major projects: (1) investigating social psychological mechanisms for sustainable weight loss, and (2) integrating sociological and psychiatric theories to explain trauma reframing and identity transformation. Her scholarship has been published in leading journals like American Journal of Sociology, Social Forces, and Emotion Review.
Her publications span topics in affective identity, volunteer-based democracy dynamics, and emotion regulation. She has served on editorial boards for Journal of Health and Social Behavior and Social Psychology Quarterly, and as action editor for Emotion Review.
Dr. Lively holds an A.A. from Tulsa Community College, a B.A. from the University of Tulsa, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Vanderbilt University. She completed postdoctoral work at Indiana University - Bloomington.
