Kathryn E. Hare is a Full Professor in the Department of Pure Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. She earned her BMath from Waterloo (1981) and PhD from the University of British Columbia (1986). Her academic appointments include visiting roles at Acadia University (2018-2019), University of St. Andrews (2013-2014), and Chalmers University of Technology (2000-2001).
- Degrees: PhD (University of British Columbia, 1986), BMath (University of Waterloo, 1981)
Her research interests span harmonic analysis on compact Lie groups, fractal geometry, and thin sets in abelian/non-abelian groups. Key contributions include the L2-singular dichotomy for orbital measures, multifractal analysis of Cantor sets, and characterization of Sidon/Kronecker sets. Her work intersects mathematical analysis, spectral theory, and geometric measure theory.
The 164 research papers referenced demonstrate expertise in convolution smoothness (Lie groups), Assouad dimension applications, and multiplier theory. Collaborators include S. Gupta, I. Garcia, K.G. Hare, and T. Ramsey. Current projects focus on fractal measures, maximal operators, and interpolation set characterizations.
- Scientific Awards:
- Fellow of the Canadian Mathematical Society (2020)
- University of Waterloo Teaching Award (2020)
- Honorary Doctorate of Technology, Chalmers University (2011)
- Female Guest Professor, Sweden (2000-2001)
- NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship (1983-85)
- I.W. Killam Predoctoral Fellowship (1985-86)
As departmental Chair (2014-2018) and Associate Chair for Graduate Affairs (multiple terms), she shaped academic governance. She has supervised 18 graduate/postdoctoral researchers and served on 25+ external committees (CMS, NSERC, AWM). Her NSERC Operating Grant (1987-present) and editorial roles (Canadian Math Bulletin) highlight sustained impact.
