Kathleen M. Vernon is a Professor at Stony Brook University’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese. She holds affiliations with the Departments of History and Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, as well as the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Center. Her expertise spans contemporary Spanish and Latin American cinema, literature, and popular culture, with a focus on musical/historical film, melodrama, documentary, and women’s cinema. She is completing a cultural history of film sound in Spain titled Listening to Spanish Cinema (Liverpool University Press). Current collaborative projects include Cinema and Everyday Life in 1940s–50s Spain: An Oral History and Film, Fashion and Photography in 1940s–50s Spain.
Recent courses taught include Mexican Cinema, Buñuel/Ripstein/Almodóvar studies, children’s literature in Spanish, and Latin American Cinema. Her research emphasizes intersections between sound, gender, and cultural history, with work published in Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies and Routledge Companion to Cinema and Gender. Vernon’s scholarship bridges film studies, historical analysis, and feminist theory, often examining underrepresented narratives in Spanish cinema.
