Kathleen Garber is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at St. Norbert College. She holds a B.S. from Franklin and Marshall College, a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and completed postdoctoral work at Indiana University. Her research bridges organic chemistry and chemical biology, focusing on combating antibiotic resistance through novel antibiotic discovery and identifying bacterial virulence targets. She actively involves undergraduates in her lab, teaching organic and biochemical techniques alongside the scientific process.
- Research emphasizes endophytic organisms' antimicrobial compounds and kinase enzymes linked to bacterial virulence signaling.
- Teaches courses including CHEM 220 (Organic Chemistry), CHEM 222 (Intermediate Organic Chemistry), and CHEM 350 (Biochemistry).
Her fieldwork includes plant collection in local nature preserves to isolate endophytes, followed by microbiological and organic chemistry methods to extract bioactive molecules. She also investigates kinases to identify new drug targets that reduce evolutionary pressure for antibiotic resistance.
Laboratory activities include kinase isolation/characterization and small molecule purification from endophytes. She emphasizes collaborative, hands-on research with undergraduate students.
