Gopeekrishnan Sreenilayam

Dr. Gopeekrishnan Sreenilayam serves as an Assistant Professor at Valdosta State University, teaching undergraduate courses including Organic Chemistry I (CHEM 3401), Organic Chemistry II (CHEM 3402), Senior Seminar (CHEM 4210), and Research in Chemistry (CHEM 4910) from his office in Bailey Science Building, room 3083.

His academic foundation includes a B.S. in Chemistry (1998) and M.S. in Analytical Chemistry (2000) from Mahatma Gandhi University, India, followed by a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry (2011) from The University of Iowa. He completed postdoctoral training in Organic Chemistry at Temple University (2011-2013) and Biocatalysis at the University of Rochester (2014-2017).

Dr. Sreenilayam's research program targets sustainable chemical innovations across critical domains:

• Biocatalysis: Engineering immobilized enzymes and whole cells in green solvents for non-natural organic transformations to replace industrial chemical processes.
• Organic Synthesis: Developing environmentally friendly designer solvents as dual-function media/catalysts for cross-coupling reactions.
• Anti-Biofilm Agents: Designing small molecules to disrupt antibiotic-resistant bacterial biofilms through inhibition or dispersion mechanisms.
• CO2 Mitigation: Converting vehicle exhaust CO2 into oxygen using algae immobilized in alginate beads.
• Chemical Education: Creating green chemistry laboratory experiments for undergraduate organic chemistry curricula.

He mentors undergraduate researchers through CHEM 4910 and integrates environmental sustainability into both research and pedagogy, with laboratory work conducted in the Bailey Science Building.
