Prof. Kathi Kæppel is a full Professor for Moving Image at Folkwang University of the Arts (since 2024) and Vice President for Digitality and Diversity (since 2025). She holds a PhD in Scientific-Artistic Research from Filmuniversitaet Babelsberg Konrad Wolf. Previously, she taught at institutions including weissensee kunsthochschule berlin (as Visiting Professor 2014–2018), Trier University of Applied Sciences (full Professor 2022), and Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (2019–2023).
Her research focuses on animation's role in contemporary storytelling, spatial configurations for moving images, and experimental techniques blending traditional and digital methods. She contributed to the Swiss National Science Foundation-funded project 'Moving in Every Direction' exploring spatial narratives.
Awarded DAAD, Fulbright, and Freedom Foundation grants, her work has been showcased globally at festivals like Biennale of Animation Bratislava, Edinburgh International Film Festival, and Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film, where she also serves as a juror. Her animated films are archived in the BFI National Collection.
Active in academic leadership, she chairs the Visual Narrative Research Group and participates in societies like Society for Animation Studies (SAS) and NECS. Her practice spans spatial/time-based artworks exhibited in venues such as Künstlerhaus Dortmund and Galerie Berliner Kunstprojekt.
