Kathi J. Smith serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Art within Husson University's College of Science and Humanities. She joined Husson University in 2014 as an Assistant Professor in Studio Arts and Art Appreciation, bringing over 15 years of experience in art education and practice throughout New England.
Her educational background includes a BFA in Painting & Drawing with a minor in Art History from the University of Southern Maine, and an MFA in Painting from the University of New Hampshire. Smith maintains an active studio practice in Bangor, ME, with works available at Greenhut Galleries (Portland ME), George Marshal Store (York ME), and Islesford Artists Gallery (Little Cranberry Island, ME).
Smith's artistic practice primarily focuses on painting and drawing, though she also works in ceramics and printmaking. Her artwork reflects New England landscapes, inviting close observation of familiar places and their narratives. She has participated in numerous regional and national exhibitions, with her most recent being a 2021 two-person exhibition at Greenhut Galleries.
Her exhibition history shows consistent activity across galleries in Maine, New York, and New Hampshire, with notable residencies including the Vermont Studio Center (with fellowship from the Joan Mitchell Foundation), Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Weir Farm National Historic Site, Heliker-LaHotan Foundation, and an international residency in Brittany, France.
