Katherine Zubovich is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University at Buffalo, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on Modern European History, particularly the history of Russia and the Soviet Union, with specialties in urban history and transnational perspectives. She holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley (2016), and prior degrees from Berkeley (MA 2011), the University of Toronto (MA 2010), and the University of Victoria (BA 2008).
Her research explores the intersection of urban development and political dynamics in the Soviet era. Notable works include Moscow Monumental: Soviet Skyscrapers and Urban Life in Stalin’s Capital (2020), which examines Stalin-era skyscraper construction, and Making Cities Socialist (2024), part of the Cambridge Elements series. Her current projects investigate Soviet data visualization under Stalin and postwar urban reconstruction's reliance on natural resources.
Zubovich has received prestigious awards such as the NEH Summer Stipend (2022) and a Kennan Institute Fellowship (2021–22). Her work emphasizes material networks in urban rebuilding, linking Soviet cities to resource extraction sites like quarries and factories. She contributes to transnational dialogues on architectural collaborations, as seen in her analysis of Soviet-American efforts in Moscow’s Palace of Soviets project.
