James Heinzen is a Professor of History at Rowan University, affiliated with the College of Humanities & Social Sciences and the Department of History. He specializes in Soviet history, particularly focusing on corruption, Stalinism, and everyday life under Soviet rule. Heinzen holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. from Trinity College (Hartford, CT). Prior to Rowan, he taught at Princeton University and Yale University.
His research explores the social, political, and cultural history of the Soviet Union, including anticorruption campaigns, Stalin’s informant networks, and the dynamics of shadow economies. Notable works include The Art of the Bribe: Corruption under Stalin, 1943-1953 (Yale UP, 2016) and Inventing a Soviet Countryside (2004). Current projects investigate underground entrepreneurs in the Soviet 1950s-80s, supported by ACLS and NEH fellowships.
Heinzen has received grants from organizations such as the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Kennan Institute, and the Open Society Archive. His awards include an ACLS National Fellowship (2019-2020) and an NEH Summer Stipend (2018).
Teaching interests span modern Russian and Soviet history, the Cold War, historical methods, and Western Civilization. He actively collaborates with academic institutions, including a visiting scholar appointment at L’École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris, 2016).
