Katherine Wisser serves as Associate Professor and Masters Program Director at Simmons University's School of Library and Information Science, concurrently directing both the Archives Concentration and Archives Certificate Program since joining the faculty in Fall 2009.
Her educational background includes:
- Doctorate in Library and Information Science (2009) from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill
- Master's in Library and Information Science (2000) from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill
- Master's in Early American History from University of New Hampshire
Wisser's research focuses on archival metadata standards, cultural heritage preservation, and information organization. Her scholarly work appears in American Archivist, Library HiTech, and Library Resources and Technical Services. As co-chair of the Technical Subcommittee for Encoded Archival Context (EAC-CPF), she shapes international archival description standards.
Professional recognition includes the Society of American Archivists Fellowship for outstanding contributions to the field. Under her leadership, Simmons' Archives Management Concentration holds the #1 national ranking.
She teaches core courses including Information Organization (LIS 415), Metadata (LIS 445), and Introduction to Archival Methods (LIS 438). Recent media engagement includes a Boston Globe interview on archival preservation challenges titled 'An archivist’s job is to keep the receipts.'
