Katherine Moos

Katherine Moos is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an Economist at the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI). She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from The New School for Social Research (2017), an M.A. in Economics (2014), and a B.A. in Political Economy from Sarah Lawrence College (2006).

Her research focuses on the political economy of policy and the welfare state, with a strong emphasis on social reproduction, unpaid household labor, and care work. She investigates how states address conflicts between social reproduction and capital accumulation through historical case studies, institutional analysis, and quantitative methods. Her work often adopts an intersectional feminist lens to analyze fiscal policies and economic systems.

Recent research trends include comparative analyses of social reproduction costs in the U.S. and U.K., neoliberal fiscal policies in the U.S. and China, and gendered labor dynamics in education and public finance. She has also published on economic history and methodological critiques of macroeconomic theories like the Lucas Critique.
