Katherine Merriman is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and Director of the Islamic Studies Program at University of Detroit Mercy's College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, M.T.S. from Harvard Divinity School, and B.A. from Vassar College.
Her research focuses on contemporary Islamic practices in America, particularly intersections of race, class, and morality in religious charity. She explores ethical frameworks for social justice in Islam and the creation of new religious institutions. A cultural historian of New York City's Muslim communities, she runs the Muslim History Tour NYC project since 2014, documenting 400 years of Muslim presence in urban spaces through walking tours and digital archives. This work has been featured in The New York Times, The New Yorker, and NPR.
Her publications analyze Islamic Studies methodologies, American Muslim nonprofit dynamics, and spatial politics in Harlem's religious landscapes. Merriman advocates for collaborative academic practices to reimagine interdisciplinary religious studies.
