Katherine Merriman is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and Director of the Islamic Studies Program at the University of Detroit Mercy’s College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences. Her work focuses on contemporary Islam in America, intersections of race and religion, and the anthropology of religious practices. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.T.S. from Harvard Divinity School, and a B.A. from Vassar College.
Her research examines charitable giving in American Muslim communities through a lens of race, class, and moral identity, alongside ethical debates in Islamic social welfare. She also serves as a cultural historian of Islam in New York City, leading the Muslim History Tour NYC since 2014—a project documenting 400 years of Muslim history in the city. This initiative has expanded to include digital preservation of Muslim community artifacts and has been featured in The New York Times, The New Yorker, and NPR.
Her publications bridge academic and public engagement, exploring topics such as collaborative methodologies in Islamic studies, bureaucratic structures in Muslim philanthropy, and spatial histories of Islamic Harlem. Merriman’s work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to understanding religion’s role in shaping social justice and cultural identity.
