Katherine Harper Campbell, MD, MPH is an Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at Yale School of Medicine. She serves as Chief of Obstetrics at Yale New Haven Hospital and as Medical Director of Labor & Birth, Maternal Special Care Unit, and Postpartum Units. Dr. Campbell is a specialist in Maternal-Fetal Medicine with a focus on high-risk pregnancies and maternal health complications.
Dr. Campbell completed her medical training at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (MD, 2004), followed by residency at Yale New Haven Hospital (2008), and fellowships in Obstetrical Ultrasound and Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Yale University (2009, 2012). She also holds an MPH in Maternal & Child Health from Tulane University (2000) and a BA in Biology from Colby College (1996).
Her research focuses on maternal cardiac disease, reduction of maternal morbidity and mortality, and obstetric quality and safety. Dr. Campbell has developed innovative approaches to strengthen healthcare systems to decrease maternal and perinatal complications. She is particularly interested in reproductive health equity and addressing disparities in care for Black individuals with high-risk pregnancies. Her work spans clinical practice improvement, patient-provider communication analysis, and epidemiological studies of pregnancy outcomes.
Dr. Campbell's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on quality improvement in labor management, stillbirth analysis, postpartum outcomes, and health equity. Her research combines clinical obstetrics with epidemiological methods to identify preventable causes of maternal morbidity. The trend in her work shows increasing attention to health equity issues and system-level interventions to improve maternal outcomes.

Dr. Campbell is highly regarded for her teaching excellence and has mentored numerous medical students and residents. She serves as co-chair of the severe maternal morbidity review committee, a multidisciplinary group that meets regularly to discuss quality improvement opportunities. Her global health work includes training obstetrical residents in Rwanda and collaborating with international committees to improve maternal care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Campbell maintains an active clinical practice while advancing research in maternal-fetal medicine and healthcare quality improvement.
