Katharine Tinto serves as Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the Criminal Justice Clinic at the University of California, Irvine School of Law, with a courtesy faculty appointment in the Department of Criminology, Law & Society. She teaches courses including Advanced Criminal Justice Clinic, Criminal Justice Clinic, and Evidence.
Professor Tinto's research and practice focus on criminal law, criminal justice, the intersection of criminal law and immigration law (crimmigration), and indigent criminal defense. Her expertise extends to federal compassionate release, clemency, policing reform, and reentry services. Prior to joining UCI Law in July 2016, she taught at Cardozo School of Law and NYU School of Law.
Her scholarly work examines critical issues in criminal justice, particularly undercover policing tactics, stash house stings, and their disproportionate impact on communities of color. Her publications reveal a consistent focus on challenging systemic inequities in the criminal legal system and advocating for meaningful reforms.

As Director of the Criminal Justice Clinic, Professor Tinto has led the Compassionate Release and Excessive Sentences Project since 2019, securing the release of 26 clients as of May 2025, including 14 who were serving life or effective life sentences. The clinic represents clients across multiple federal jurisdictions and has gained national recognition for its impactful work. Under her leadership, the clinic has expanded to address critical issues at the intersection of criminal law and immigration consequences.
