Katharine Smith

Dr. Katharine Smith is a Reader in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Manchester. She holds a PhD from the University of London (2005) and has been with the university since 2010. Her research focuses on spacecraft systems engineering, satellite propulsion, and electrospray technology. Notable roles include Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2013) and leadership in the Space Systems Research Group. Current projects include the DISCOVERER initiative exploring Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) satellite operations and the development of Atmosphere-Breathing Electric Propulsion (ABEP) systems. She advises multiple PhD students and collaborates on interdisciplinary robotics and sustainability initiatives.
