Dr. Katharine Balolia is a Senior Lecturer in Biological Anthropology at the School of Archaeology & Anthropology, The Australian National University. Her academic journey includes a PhD from University College London (2006–2014) followed by a postdoctoral position at George Washington University. She specializes in primate morphology, hominin evolution, and 3D morphometric techniques.
Her research focuses on sexual dimorphism, hominin social behavior evolution, primate taxonomy, and cranial anatomy. She employs advanced methods like 3D surface scanning and geometric morphometrics to analyze morphological variation in primates and hominins. Her work bridges paleontology, anthropology, and evolutionary biology, with a particular emphasis on understanding taxonomic classifications and evolutionary adaptations.
Dr. Balolia leads research projects such as
- "What can capuchin monkeys tell us about the evolution of our extinct, ape-like australopith relatives?"
- "Middle and Later Stone Age human occupation of the Retina Hippo Pool site, Grumeti River Region, Serengeti National Park, Tanzania"
She actively contributes to educational initiatives, including evaluating online laboratory methods using 3D models in biological anthropology education and supervising postgraduate research.
Collaborations span institutions like the Center for the Advanced Study of Human Paleobiology (CASHP) at George Washington University, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to human evolutionary studies.
