Katharina van Treeck

Katharina van Treeck is an Associate Research Fellow at the GIGA Institute for African Affairs (since 2017) and previously a Research Fellow at the GIGA Institute of Asian Studies (2012–2017). She holds a B.A. in Politics and Economics from the University of Münster (2009) and an M.A. in International Economics (focus: development economics) from the University of Göttingen and the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in Pune, India (2012).

Her research focuses on social/ecological sustainability of cocoa cultivation in Indonesia, income distribution dynamics, and global capital flows' impact on inequality. She has conducted fieldwork in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, analyzing topics like smallholder crop choices and labor-income shares. She teaches courses on development economics and controversies in development studies at the University of Göttingen.

Her work aligns with the GIGA's 'Globalization and Development' research program. She has collaborated on projects funded by institutions like UNU WIDER and contributed to policy-relevant discussions on sustainable agricultural practices and labor economics in developing countries.
