Katharina Palme is a Doctoral Fellow in the Research Training Group "Contradiction Studies" at the University of Bremen, conducting research on antagonistic characters and character relations in Middle High German heroic epics. She is concurrently a member of the AWA (Arbeitskreis Wiener Altgermanistik)-Nachwuchsnetzwerk at the University of Vienna since 2021.
Her academic background includes a Master in Medieval Language, Literature and Culture from Trinity College Dublin (2017–2018) and a Bachelor in German Philology from the University of Vienna (2012–2017), complemented by an Erasmus Scholarship at Trinity College Dublin (2016–2017) and an Award for excellent studies at the University of Vienna (2015).
Palme's research centers on Medieval Languages and Literatures with specialization in Middle High German and Old Irish, examining Heroic Sagas, the Construction of Otherworlds in medieval narratives, and Historic Narratology. Her doctoral project analyzes contradictions in antagonist roles within the 'Nibelungenstoffkreis' and 'Historische Dietrichepik,' using structuralist and diachronic approaches to trace figures like Hagen von Tronje from antagonist to antihero.
She has presented findings at major conferences including the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (2023), Altgermanistisches Colloquium am Hesselberg (2022), and University Koblenz-Landau's Figuration des Bösen conference (2022), demonstrating active engagement with Germanic medieval scholarship across European institutions.
Her scientific recognition is marked by the University of Vienna's Award for excellent studies (2015), though a 2022 DAAD fellowship for bi-national dissertation work was declined. Teaching contributions include leading a seminar on "Das Nibelungenlied" at the University of Bremen during Summer Semester 2023.
As part of the "Contradiction Studies" RTG, Palme operates within an interdisciplinary research environment exploring contradiction as a foundational concept in literary, historical, and philosophical contexts, with particular emphasis on medieval German heroic traditions.
