Katharina Gerstenberger is a Professor in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of Utah. She served as Chair of the department from 2012–2018 and held the 2019/21 Research Professorship in Environmental Humanities. Her scholarship focuses on German literature, ecocriticism, and disaster narratives.

Her research spans post-Wall German literature, intertextuality, and environmental humanities, often addressing how culture responds to catastrophes like Chernobyl and Fukushima. Recent publications include analyses of Adolf Muschg’s post-Fukushima fiction and Peter Handke’s nature writing.
Gerstenberger’s work has been recognized with the Environmental Humanities Professorship (2018) and the Distinguished Scholar Award (2022). She co-edits German Studies Review and has served on MLA and DAAD committees.
