Bernhard Malkmus is a Professor of German and Environmental Humanities at the University of Oxford, affiliated with New College. His academic career includes positions at Newcastle University, The Ohio State University, and Charles University in Prague. He holds fellowships from DAAD (2016) and the Humboldt Foundation (2020–21). His research explores how cultural practices shape human-environment relationships since the 18th century, focusing on literature, environmental ethics, and modernity. Key themes include ecocriticism, Romanticism, and narrative theory in the Anthropocene. He teaches modules on German canonical texts, digital cultures, and environmental literature.
Research interests span environmental humanities, comparative literature, and the intersections of aesthetics with systemic ecological challenges. Current projects include a literary history of the 'Great Acceleration' and creative writings on extinction. He publishes in newspapers/magazines and co-edits the Ecocriticism series at Metzler Press.
