Katharina Gartner is a researcher and lecturer at the University of Vienna's Department of African Studies and Vienna University of Economics and Business. Her work focuses on youth and expressive cultures, particularly music, with an interdisciplinary approach combining African studies, ethnomusicology, and popular culture studies. She holds an IFK_Junior Fellow Abroad position at the International Research Center for Cultural Studies and has conducted research at Harvard University and the University of Ghana. Her doctoral research examines young instrumental musicians in Accra, Ghana, exploring themes like prolonged youth, creativity, urbanization, and globalization.
Education includes studies in Vienna, Paris, and Accra, specializing in African studies, music anthropology, and youth psychoanalysis. Her research spans Ghana, Austria, and four other African countries. She has presented lectures on transcontinental musical relations and published on topics such as masculinity in Ghanaian music and intercultural counseling.
Publications include peer-reviewed articles in Gender, Place and Culture, radio interviews on South African jazz, and works on cultural differences in education. Her fellowship activities and lectures highlight her engagement with global academic networks and fieldwork in West and Southeast Africa.
