Kath Hughes is a Lecturer in Visual Culture at the University of the West of England, within the College of Arts, Technology and Environment. She teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate Art & Design programmes and currently leads the Independent Research Project module.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD
- MA in Fine Art
- BA (Hons) in Fine Art
She is also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).
Her research interests lie at the intersection of digital-mediation, performance documentation, autoethnographic writing, embodied and affective research methodologies, biopolitics, and critical theory in praxis. She explores how digitally-mediated bodies can be understood through performative and sound-based approaches, with a focus on rhythms, embodiment, and critical feminist perspectives.
Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on the rhythms of the body in digital and physical spaces, particularly through running and weightlifting as research practices. She investigates how sound and digital documentation can capture embodied experiences, contributing to critical discussions on biopolitics and self-surveillance in the digital age.
Dr. Hughes is an active member of the Visual Culture Research Group and the WoW research network at UWE, and co-founded the Running Artfully Network, which explores running as a research methodology across disciplines.
