Professor Kate Retford is Professor of History of Art at Birkbeck, University of London, where she researches eighteenth-century British portraiture, country house collections, and gender studies. She holds a PhD from Cornell University and has received funding from the British Academy, AHRC, Paul Mellon Centre, and Leverhulme Trust.
Her research examines visual culture through interdisciplinary frameworks, focusing on:
- Representation and display in English country houses
- Conversation pieces as modern art forms
- Gender dynamics in eighteenth-century portraiture
- Print rooms as historical artifacts
Her recent publications demonstrate sustained engagement with material culture analysis, particularly through digital reconstructions of historical interiors and Shakespearean iconography in royal collections.
Awards and distinctions include:
- Hall Center Humanities Research Fellowship (2017)
- Shortlisted for Apollo Book of the Year (2018)
