Kate Mitchell is a Senior Lecturer in Journalism, Media and Communication at the University of Strathclyde, with a focus on interdisciplinary feminist cultural studies of modern Italy. She holds a PhD in nineteenth-century Italian literature from the University of Warwick. Her roles include Deputy Director of Postgraduate Research in the Department of Humanities and membership in the University's Feminist Network.
Education: BA in Italian with French from the University of Leeds; MA by Research in Italian opera and gender (Leeds); PhD in Italian literature (Warwick). Previous positions include Junior Research Fellow at Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge, and Visiting Fellowships at Oxford, Seton Hall University, and others.
Research interests span Italian women's cultural contributions in literature, theatre, opera, and film, with a focus on gender, spectatorship, and feminist media history. Current projects examine early 20th-century Italian female screenwriters and their collaborative networks. Teaching spans Italian language/culture and gender studies, with over 25 years of university teaching experience.
Awards include Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Edinburgh Gadda Prize finalist, and multiple teaching excellence nominations. She is an External Examiner at Royal Holloway, University of London, and sits on editorial boards for Italian Studies and Gender/Sexuality/Italy.
