Dr. Kate M. Guthrie is a Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior and Professor of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Brown University, holding dual appointments in the Alpert Medical School and the School of Public Health. She serves as the Director of the Qualitative Science & Methods Training Program and a Senior Research Scientist at The Miriam Hospital's Center for Behavioral & Preventive Medicine. Her research focuses on perceptibility (user sensory experiences) in biomedical/pharmaceutical development, particularly for HIV prevention and palliative care. She has pioneered frameworks linking sensory experiences to product acceptability and adherence.
Education:
- PhD in Clinical Psychology, Western Michigan University (1996)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship at Brown University's Centers for Alcohol & Addiction Studies (1996-1998)
Research Interests: Dr. Guthrie's work spans behavioral medicine, HIV/STI prevention, and chronic illness care. She develops mixed-methods approaches to evaluate user experiences with biomedical products, focusing on sensory perceptions that influence adherence. Her recent projects include optimizing non-hormonal contraceptive vaginal rings, palliative care for pulmonary hypertension patients, and yoga interventions for diabetes management. She also investigates patient-clinician communication and end-of-life care processes.
Scientific Awards:
- 2022 OWIMS Leadership Award
- 2011 Betty Marcus Women's Health Award
- 2010-2011 Brown University Faculty Mentoring Award
- 2003 Society of Behavioral Medicine Annual Meeting Citation
Grants & Collaborations: Dr. Guthrie leads NIH-funded projects, including R01 grants for yoga in diabetes and vaginal ring development. She collaborates with researchers like Dr. Rochelle Rosen (qualitative methods) and Dr. Megan Ranney (emergency medicine). Her work also interfaces with engineering teams to design user-centric pharmaceutical formulations.
Labs & Teams: She directs the Qualitative Science & Methods Training Program, mentoring over 50 trainees. Her lab actively partners with bioengineers and clinicians to advance patient-centered healthcare technologies.
