Dr. Kate Hoffman is an Associate Research Professor of Environmental Natural Sciences and Director of Graduate Studies in the Integrated Toxicology and Environmental Health Program at Duke University. Her work focuses on environmental health, toxicology, and exposure assessment. She holds a Ph.D. from Boston University (2010). Recent research explores chemical exposures in children, firefighters, and vulnerable populations, with a focus on PFAS, flame retardants, and parabens. Dr. Hoffman directs studies like the North Carolina Firefighter Cancer Cohort and the Carolina Thyroid Cancer Study, addressing environmental modifiers of disease severity and cancer risks.
Her research highlights disparities in environmental exposure impacts, particularly for marginalized groups, and emphasizes innovative sampling methods like silicone wristbands to track chemical uptake. Notable grants include EPA funding for PFAS exposure pathways and a National Cancer Institute initiative. Awards include the Nicholas School’s Excellence in Mentorship Award (2025).
Key areas of investigation include climate change’s immunological burden on HIV patients, neurodevelopmental effects of SVOCs, and the intersectionality of environmental justice with health equity. Dr. Hoffman collaborates widely, publishing on topics ranging from canine bladder cancer biomarkers to maternal-fetal exposure dynamics.
