Kate Helsen serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Music Education at the Don Wright Faculty of Music, Western University. Previously, she held a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Toronto and completed doctoral research at the University of Regensburg, Germany.
Her research focuses on the intersection of medieval musicology and digital humanities, with expertise in Gregorian chant transmission, neumatic notation evolution, and computational analysis of ancient manuscripts. Current projects include Optical Neume Recognition for digitizing thousand-year-old musical documents and Melodic Construction and Evolution applying data analytics to chant repertories.
Her scientific awards include:

Dr. Helsen maintains active research collaborations including CANTUS (since 2004), The Becket Project (since 2008), and the Musical Exchanges 1100-1650 project at Lisbon's CESEM (2009-2013). She contributes to international digital initiatives like The Liturgical Veneration of Irish Saints project and performs professionally with Toronto's Tafelmusic Chamber Choir specializing in Baroque performance practice.
