David Calnitsky is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Western University. His research focuses on sociological theory, social policy, poverty, and social change, with a particular emphasis on basic income experiments and their impacts on work, crime, and social dynamics. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and additional degrees in Economics, Political Science, and Architecture. His work has been published in journals such as Socio-Economic Review, Sociological Theory, and Social Problems.
Key research projects include analyzing the Manitoba Basic Income Experiment, exploring the welfare state's dynamics, and co-authoring a book project on Erik Olin Wright's social theory. He has received significant grants, including SSHRC Insight Grants, and has presented at international conferences such as SASE and ASA.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on modern sociological theory, global inequality, and social policy. His awards include the Katherine DuPre Lumpkin Dissertation Award and the Canadian Review of Sociology Best Article Award. Current projects investigate housing policy outcomes and collective action's role in shaping social spending.
