Professor Kate Dunn is a Professor of Epidemiology at Keele University's School of Medicine. She leads the Keele University Centre for Musculoskeletal Health Research, focusing on musculoskeletal pain epidemiology in primary care and populations, particularly in children, adolescents, and adults. Her work is funded by major organizations like the Wellcome Trust and NIHR. Dunn holds editorial roles at journals like Pain and chairs the NIHR Research Design Service advisory board.
Education: BSc in Geography (Nottingham University), MPhil, and PhD in Epidemiology of Back Pain in Primary Care (Keele University). She worked with Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) in India as an epidemiologist from 1999–2000.
Research Interests: Musculoskeletal pain trajectories, stratified care approaches (e.g., STarT MSK tool), pediatric pain, and healthcare utilization. Recent studies include predicting work absence risks, evaluating sciatica subgroups, and addressing mental health comorbidities in youth pain.
Grants & Leadership: Leads major grants including NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research (CAM-Pain Programme, CLIMB Study). Her STarT MSK tool has been validated internationally and guides clinical decision-making. She collaborates with NHS Trusts and international teams on musculoskeletal health initiatives.
Labs/Teams: Directs the Keele Musculoskeletal Health Research Centre, coordinating multidisciplinary projects on pain epidemiology and intervention development.
