Kate Cowles is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Education at the University of Vermont, specializing in Early Childhood Education (PreK-3) licensure. She holds a B.A. in English and Philosophy from The College of Wooster and an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from the University of Vermont. Her roles include teaching courses such as Culturally Responsive Education, Preschool Curriculum Development, and Children's Literature & Literacy, as well as serving as Student Internship Supervisor.
Since 2013, she has worked as a mentor teacher at UVM’s Campus Children’s School and became a full-time lecturer in 2016. Her research and professional activities focus on critical pedagogy, children’s participatory rights, and civic engagement. She actively presents at national and state conferences, including the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and Vermont Early Learning Standards (VELS) Institute.
Award recognition includes the 2013 Educational Leadership Graduate Award in Education and Public Affairs from UVM. Her work emphasizes bridging theory and practice in early childhood education through mentorship, curriculum development, and advocacy for equitable educational practices.
