Karyl Garland is a Lecturer at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, holding dual roles in the Department of English and the Shidler College of Business. She has been teaching since 2008 and has edited numerous academic works, including dissertations in architecture and historical texts. Her research focuses on business writing, rhetoric, cultural expression, and precision in written communication. Garland has received awards for teaching excellence and journalism, including the 2019 Frances Davis Award and a Folio Eddie Award.
Education: MA in English (Composition and Rhetoric) from UH Mānoa (2001); BA in English (Cum Laude) from UH Mānoa (1992).
Research Interests: Business communication ethics, rhetoric in professional settings, cultural expression through writing, and editorial practices. She advocates for clarity and cultural sensitivity in both academic and trade publications.
Publications: Her work spans textbooks, edited academic texts, and trade articles. Recent highlights include College Writing: Connect, Collaborate, Communicate (2019) and award-winning pieces in HILuxury magazine.
Awards: Winner of 2019 Frances Davis Award and 2019 Folio Eddie Award for journalism.
Professional Roles: Member of the American Copy Editors Society (ACES), certified in online pedagogy through UH’s Center for Language & Technology.
