Kartavya Sharma, M.D. is Assistant Professor of Neurology and Neurocritical Care at UT Southwestern Medical Center, holding primary appointment in the Department of Neurology and secondary appointment in the Department of Neurological Surgery. He directs the BraNiC (Brain Networks in Coma) Lab and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Neuroimaging.
Education & Certifications
- M.D., All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India
- Residency in Neurology, UT Southwestern Medical Center
- Fellowship in Neurocritical Care, Johns Hopkins University
- Board-certified in Neurology, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology
- Board-certified in Neurocritical Care, United Council of Neurological Subspecialties
Research Focus
Dr. Sharma's research centers on prognostication of recovery after severe brain injury. His work integrates advanced neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and biomarker analysis to predict outcomes in comatose patients. Current projects investigate EEG-derived brain network dynamics, cerebrovascular dysfunction's influence on recovery, and predictive modeling using clinical data and time-series analyses.
His lab employs non-invasive assessments of neuronal and cerebrovascular function in ICU settings, studying both traumatic and non-traumatic coma. Key areas include:
- EEG and fMRI network dynamics in disorders of consciousness
- Biomarker discovery for anoxic and traumatic brain injury outcomes
- Clinical trial participation in stroke, SAH, and ICH studies
- Translational research on axon regeneration after CNS injury
Publications & Impact
Dr. Sharma has authored over 25 peer-reviewed publications, including landmark studies on coma localization, intracranial pressure monitoring, and neuroprognostication. His 2021 systematic review on neuron-specific enolase thresholds for post-cardiac arrest outcomes established new clinical benchmarks. Recent 2024 publications in Cognitive Neuropsychology and Neurocritical Care advance understanding of coma care practices.
