Karolina Czeczek is an Adjunct Professor at Yale University's School of Architecture and Principal of Only If, a New York City-based design practice. Her work bridges architectural practice and academia with a focus on socially engaged design.
Her research interests center on reimagining domestic spaces and urban infrastructure through the lens of care, equity, and housing rights. She critically examines how building codes and spatial configurations reinforce social hierarchies, advocating for architectural solutions that prioritize human existence over commodification. Her studios explore themes like domestic labor networks, alternative household compositions, and community-driven housing models in contexts ranging from Mexico City to New York.
Notable recognitions include the Fulbright Scholar award and Yale's Wirt Winchester Travel Fellowship. Only If, her firm, has received international acclaim including Architectural Record's Design Vanguard (2022) and Domus Magazine's 50 Best Architecture Firms (2020).
- People's Pool project exhibited at MoMA's 'Architecture Now: New York, New Publics'
- Winner of NYC HPD's Big Ideas for Small Lots competition for affordable housing
- Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize nomination (2022)
Czeczek has taught design studios at multiple institutions including University of Pennsylvania, Syracuse University, and Pratt Institute. Her pedagogy emphasizes hands-on engagement with social infrastructure, evidenced by studio trips to Mexico City to study UTOPIAS community centers and Los Angeles housing models. She collaborates with leading architects like Tatiana Bilbao on studios addressing constitutional housing rights and spatial justice.
